Joseph Neale from Seghill in Northumberland was left with a serious brain injury after medical staff failed to treat him correctly.
Mr Neale was twice referred to North Tyneside Hospital by his GP after suffering from drowsiness, vomiting and a throbbing headache over his right eye.
Mr Neale was first referred to the Accident and Emergency unit but was discharged without treatment. The second time he was referred to the Medical Admission Unit but was then placed on a general ward and not given the emergency treatment he needed.
His condition deteriorated overnight and medical staff then sent him for a scan which revealed a subdural haematoma. Mr Neale was then rushed to Newcastle General Hospital for emergency treatment.
Mr Neale survived but was left with a serious brain injury. He will now need 24-hour care for the rest of his life.
Mr Neale’s daughter contacted solicitors at Irwin Mitchell in relation to a possible compensation claim.
Clinical negligence specialist Angela Kirtley was successful in securing a seven-figure compensation settlement that allowed Mr Neale to move out of his care home and into a house close to his daughter.
