Young Girl Receives Maximum Criminal Injuries Compensation

20/11/2009

Amy Lea Laycock has been awarded £500,000 in compensation after she was left blind and brain damaged following a brutal attack by her father.

The award, achieved with the assistance of Irwin Mitchell Solicitors, is the largest possible under the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme, which awards compensation to victims of crime.

Solicitors at Irwin Mitchell have criticised the system, claiming that the compensation award will not be enough to cater for Amy’s lifelong care needs. Had Amy’s sustained injuries in an accident rather than a criminal assault it is likely that her award would have been significantly higher.

Amy was just 10 weeks old when she was attacked by her father. He was given an eight-year jail sentence after being convicted of GBH with intent.

The compensation award will be used to provide the essential care that Amy requires, including the cost of accommodation, transport, equipment and the cost of carers.
