Wii Support Trust-Ed

15/10/2010

On 8th October 2010, Philip Edwards, Partner in Personal Injury in Birmingham, along with several colleagues, had the privilege of attending the Trust-Ed / SENAD open day for the new “Trust Centre” specialist school for children with acquired brain injury.

Trust-Ed is a charity that Irwin Mitchell has worked closely with for a number of years.  The Charity recognised a need to provide specialist education for children who have an acquired brain injury. Over the last few years the Charity has been consulting, planning and drawing upon expertise globally. As a result, the Charity has been working with the SENAD Group on a project to deliver the first specialist school for children with acquired brain injury in the UK.

The result of this work is that the school, located near Belper, Derbyshire, is about to open and begin providing a service to students over the course of the next few months.

The open day was an opportunity for people to have a tour of the fantastic facilities at the school and to hear first hand from staff and trustees about the philosophy of “rehabilitative education” to be adopted at the centre.

The School will provide a mixture or residential and non-residential education to children aged 9 to 19 with acquired brain injury and is truly unique. The pupils’ programme will follow a bespoke, dynamic and “24-hour” curriculum.

Philip was also able to donate a Nintendo Wii console to the Centre.  Staff hope to be able to use the Wii as part of the rehabilitative process for students and also to provide some much needed fun and recreation as part of the 24-hour curriculum.

Philip said:-

“It is rare that I attend events such as these and come away so excited and inspired by the work done by people such as Trust-Ed and SENAD. The School is truly unique, I have no doubt that any pupil who attends here will benefit from the education and rehabilitation provided and will maximise their potential. I hope that our donation of a Wii helps in some small way towards achieving those goals, Trust-Ed can count on the continuing support of Irwin Mitchell.”

Philip is pictured handing over the Wii to the Head of the Trust Centre, Janette Ashworth.
